The rich traditions of Haywood County have a deep foundation anchored by an array of artisans. Ranging from painters to weavers, blacksmiths to photographers, the beauty of our natural landscape and its people are only complimented by the quality of our creative entities.
The first Friday evening of the month, from May until December, downtown Waynesville comes alive during Art After Dark. For serious art purveyors, it’s a time to study and muse over the latest works to hit the gallery walls. For artists, it’s a time to share their creative talents
But for the vast majority, the leisurely Main Street meander is a social occasion with art as a backdrop, a curious stroll bearing witness to the beauty created in their own backyard.
In addition to the downtown art galleries and strolls, the Haywood Arts Regional Theater just two blocks off Main Street, hosts full-scale theater productions. HART uses local actors and guild professionals, producing top-notch plays that perennially win regional and national awards.
Each July, Folkmoot USA, North Carolina’s official international festival, is another of Haywood County’s unique cultural amenities. The 10-day international dance and musical festival brings up to 300 dancers and musician to the community.
Innumerable local, regional and national acts continually find their way to Haywood. They perform on several stages, whether it’s a Broadway play put on by Haywood Arts Regional Theater, Appalachian clogging at the Fines Creek Community Center or old time mountain pickin’ at various locations in Waynesville, Maggie Valley, Canton and Clyde.
At the heart of Haywood County are our beloved musicians, Emmy-award winning Balsam Range. The renowned bluegrass quintet has made a name for themselves over the last decade, winning fans and accolades across the country.
